I think I could actually survive on just watermelon every summer! Does anything say summer refreshment like a ripe, juicy, watermelon? Except for maybe lemonade? My fun summer get-together idea involves both!

First, my husband, kids, and I headed to Kroger for our supplies. We found the biggest watermelon that we could find and then grabbed a bottle of Minute Maid® Lemonade- THE quintessential summer beverage, and a bottle of Sprite®. Well, technically my son grabbed them for me since he is taller than I am now.  Look for 2 liter toppers and tear pad with coupons for additional savings- If you buy any 2 Minute Maid or Sprite 2 liters you can save $1 off your watermelon purchase at Kroger.

I used the hollowed out watermelon as a bowl to hold ice to chill the bottles and then actually created frozen watermelon cubes to use in the glasses instead of ice cubes.

I cut a section from the watermelon lengthwise. Hang on to the piece!

You can use whatever method you like for cutting it up and cleaning it out. A watermelon cutter would be ideal for this task, but I just used my knife to make cuts through until I felt the rind and then cut across in the same way creating a grid pattern.

Then I scooped everything out with a big spoon.

I took the big pieces and cut them into cube shapes as uniformly and perfectly as possible so that they would look beautiful in the glasses. Remove any seeds. Place the cubes into a plastic container and freeze them for 3-4 hours. I made sure the sides of the cubes didn’t touch so that they wouldn’t freeze together.

Line the watermelon “bowl” with plastic wrap or a plastic bag (I used a Kroger bag) and put about 2 cups of ice in the bottom.

Place your bottles in the “bowl” and fill the empty space with more ice. Prepare your glasses with some frozen watermelon cubes, pretty watermelon and lemon slices as garnish, and straws! I used the first piece that I cut off to create the little slices.

Guests can choose Minute Maid Lemonade, Sprite or a half-and-half mixture of the 2 beverages to create their own sparkling lemonade! That’s my summer gathering drink of choice and it is so delicious and refreshing!
